Sailing Log Copyright SailingRX 2010

A Tutorial Version 1.0 April 22, 2010

Introduction
The Sailing Log will not and cannot replace safe boating procedures, following all the rules of the road and maintaining proper procedures on board is a critical need when boating. The Sailing Log is not to be used as you navigation device, the Log’s intent was to provide a simple and effective method of using mobile technology to track you sailing and boating adventures.

A Tutorial Version 1.0 April 22, 2010
The App Sailing Log was designed to duplicate the needs of a paper log. There are many examples of logs, logbooks and other sailing data gathering paper-based logs. I looked to the many examples of logs and my experience as a delivery skipper and developed a log that will provide the basic needs and will allow growth for the app and expanded use by the sailor.

There are four main icons on Sailing Log.

Icon One:
Start a New Log:
By touching Start a New Log, a three-tab page will open. This is the first step in tracking your trip. First enter the log name, this could be the name of the trip, your own private title or it can be from and too entry, I have provide one example for each below:

Name of your trip:
Weekend with the Kids

Private Title:
My Great Adventure

To and from:
Newport, RI to Block Island

What you name the trip is fully your choice, since each log will be tracked by date and time, multiple names over the course of season will not confuse you or the Log.

First Tab:
Vessel Name:
Simple, enter the name of your vessel or the vessel you are on board.

Skipper Name:
If you are the skipper add you name and title. If you are on board a friend vessel then add their name, if you on a chartered vessel add the Captain’s names.

Description of the Vessel:
Provide a detailed description of the type, size, function of the vessel. For example:
Sail Boat, J-46, blue hulled sloop sail number 32459. Or 45-foot Catalina sailboat, sloop, and sail number 12345. You could include additional information such as 52-foot ketch, bull hull, white boot strip, registration number 09876, registered in CT.

Vessel Photo:
You have two choices; the first is to Remove Photo the second choice is Change Photo. If you select Remove Photo and you have not added a photo the screen will not change. You can determine if you added a photo, the photo you included will be contained on this page in the lower left hand corner.

If you select Change Photo (you can see the photo you plan to change) you will be linked to your photo albums and you will be able to select any image included in your photo album. Tip: Have the image you plan to add included within your Photo Albums. The first few version of this app do not allow you to image a new photo directly while using the app. Future version will provide this function.
Select the photo album, which includes the image you desire to be included within the Sailing Log. Touch the image you wish to include and the log page opens with the image included.

Second Tab:
Crew:
Add each crewmember to the fields indicated. Insert First Name, Last Name, Passport Number, and provide any needed emergency Contact Information.

Once you have completed the entry for the first crewmember, select Add Crew Member and add the second crewmember. Tip: Include your self as a crewmember, with your supporting information. Include within the emergency information, any medications that crew member may need, food allergies and other special needs.

After you have completed the entry for each crewmember (one page per member) you can select Add Crew Member. You will need to list at least one crewmember, you will be prompted to add a crewmember before you can proceed to the Itinerary Tab.

A soon to be released revision will allow you to add photos of crewmembers to their page.

Third Tab:
Itinerary:
This tab will provide you with a record of the trip overview. For example, the first field asks that you indicate the Port or Location of Departure. As an example, if you are leaving for Annapolis, input Annapolis as you port, but say you are in the Chesapeake and not leaving for any specific port of call, enter the Chesapeake Bay. You can enter the Lat/Long as well. Currently this is a non-automated entry.

Today’s Date and Today’s Time:
The next two tabs are auto added and will list the date and time of your departure.
You can enter these fields as well and override the auto entry, just touch the field and enter data.

Destination:
This one line entry should list the next post of call or your destination. For example, I plan to head to Savannah, Georgia, I would entry Savannah, GA and if available the Lat/Lon as well.

Route Name:
This filed will provide you with the ability enter a name that will be used by Sailing Log to track the trip and allow you to update the log using the Edit/Use Existing Log Icon. For example, name the trip Annapolis to Savannah.

Once you have entered your Route name, touch Done and then Save.
A prompt will ask if you would like to create a Quick Log.

If you choose the No, the home screen is presented.

If you wish to add greater detail to the log, including your position, weather and sea conditions, touch Yes. This function will open a new Quick Log that is named, in our example Annapolis to Savannah.

Icon Two
Edit/Use Existing Log:
Once you have entered a New Log and you are now under way, use this function to track you trip. Touch the home screen icon and a list of your logs will appear. If you select any log, again for example Annapolis to Savannah, a new Quick Log page will open. Use this function to provide a chronological log of your trip. The date, time, Lat/Lon are automatically entered, you do the rest. For information on creating a Quick Log see Icon Three below.

Is you touch the arrow a text version of the Sailing Log and under a second tab the text of all you Quick Logs will be shown. The log is tracked by name, using our example of Annapolis to Savannah, you would see the Sailing Log for this rip under logs, touch the Quick Log Tab and you will see in the order they have been entered each Quick Log for this trip.

Icon Three
Create A Quick Log
If you wish to capture trip information in a simple and effective method you can open a Quick Log Page and the time and date as well as your instant position are captured automatically. You can now name the Quick Log, saw dolphins at this location, dropped my hat in the water or provide any other name you wish.
The Quick Log allows you to add additional information such as course, wind speed and direction, overall weather conditions, cloud type, Visibility, Air and water temperature, wave height and direction as well as input a Barometer reading.

Icon Four
Create a Float Plan:
A critical need for any sailing or boating trip is let those at home or at the marina, know where you are, where you plan to go and when you are expect top arrive at you destination or arrive at your home port.

I advise that you create a float plan prior to pulling your hook from the bottom, releasing your mooring pendent or leaving a slip. Complete the log and then email the complete log to a responsible party that can if needed provide if needed the details of your float plan to the proper authorities.
Once you arrive at your destination create and email a second Float Plan that indicates your safe arrival.

A new updated version of the Sailing Log will be released in the next week. The new version will resolve the date/time/location request and the new release will link the Sailing Log with the Quick log to allow greater flexibility in tracking your trips. Additional improvements will also be included.
For example contained within the comments section, each of the comments will now be a field that can be reached by a scroll and look more like the wind and position fields.
